Lee McKenna
Lee McKenna's work is something I want to focus on recreating and making my own interpretation of it. I enjoy the use of materials from different magazines, the old fashion look and the tea bag colour of the entire paper. I enjoy how there is barely any white on the paper and how other colours which are bold are also included in the images, but only little slips of it. The majority of photographs are taken in black and white, which is something I would probably also follow through with or take images with the same colour scheme in the photographs which are like red, blue, yellow or green. The photographs that are also cutup and distorted are old photographs theres nothing new and even if there is a new photographs it has been effected to looks old. The artist also uses words and writing to demonstrate materials its very abstracted. For my materials this work is my favourite the old. This is what I believe would be my favourite design for a final pieces as the collages are most creative and very personal, using collages and letter and words makes it one of a kind and very clear its your own work.
I believe the photographer/artists uses materials with a similar design, Its creative as the materials layered on top of each other go so uniquely together, you have to have a certain perspective of what you want, have a view of the idea in your already as you designing it. He/She uses photographs of natural images such as flowers however uses images of people which eventually get disfigured. The images are laid out neatly with evened out space and sharp edges, the most striking part of the work is the unusual effect a collage of random bits of material can look so eye catchy to just around a photograph. For material you can use anything as a material even if its a form solids or liquids another idea could be to form a piece with my own photograph and getting a type of liquid or maybe even paint and laminating images together with the pain on top then being spread and squished on top.

How I might respondI might respond by collecting old newspapers, train tickets any old material or documents, paper card and collecting them to be made in to a collage where no materials clash and and are mixed with a photograph. I can create many themes with this idea surrounding Lee McKennas work. Starting of with layering out photographs, photograms and materials and making many of them and creating a collection of similar pieces of work. focusing on small words and details that people an notice when looking at it. makes the work have something new/different everytime you look at it

Sally Mankus
I researched Sally mankus uses photographic and materials and completely combines it into on image, Her images look painted but have a really abstract and pop art effect. I like her idea as it can be replicated in many ways maybe using an iron or laminator to squish two pieces together like a material and a photograph and getting them together to create an abstract material piece. Sally's work looks very abstract and very artistic, it looks as if the photograph has been painted. I like this work because it looks very artistic yet is all about photography the work is very abstract. Sally mankus work also looks very vintage as material looks worn out and faded away. The idea of and photograph being uploaded or printed onto any material is kind of satisfying. sally's work creates some sort of depth and deep moods the work is very dark and shows a lot In just one image. Sally also creates a confusion as sometimes with the material we can't tell if the image has been given off a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional effect.
Annegret Soltau
Annegret Soltau chooses to represent her photography as collages and meaningful images, she uses photographs pf herself and also sews over the images with black thread. The use of black thread looks like stitching and also creates a mysterious effect. The work is very unidentified as the original image has been turned abstract and is no longer original, photographs of peoples faces have been merged with images of other people, other things or creatures. However there work also has black and white images with black stitching all over it. They are both from the same artist but have different look and designs. Her work is quite deep and looks as if its sending out a message which is touching and emotional. Maybe its representing a message of self harming or depression or some time of emotion being expressed through the imagery. The way the work is created may be by just simply sewing lines as if its

Hannah Hoch
Hannah Hoch is one of the first photoghers\artists to create work involving collages, her work is from old magazines and unusual imagery , they are different and kind of creepy. The work is cut up pieces from newspapers and also magazines, they use facial features and body parts and are combined to recreate a human face or figure. Her work looks old fashioned as they are very old images from old magazines, so the quality of the work is also blurry but does look effective as the images are good. She is where the originate of photomontage (fotomontage)came from. Her work is where she has used actual photographs from actual newspaper reports, either her own images or something she has taken from work online. Her work was used to dismantle the fable. Her work looks as if it ancient her old designs make it look as if it is from a magazine and its cartoon. her work for some reason reminds me of machinery, the different part being joined together like a robot or mechanics
Her work contains many different techniques for example collaging, organising, recreating and designing. her work contains a lot of thinking as they are all completely different. Not one of her designs have the same picture, same cut out even many of them use a range of different colours in one photo where as if it will be yellow, blue, red, brown or green.

Katherine D Crone
Katherine D Crone's work played with materials in a different way, he used multiple layers of the same bit of material to create one whole image, the images are transparent and ephemera. her work is reflected from light and is also displayed in a common pattern the images overlap however some use more transparent paper then other pieces. Katherine's work uses images such as the ocean, skies very pretty and colourful scenery's. I like her work however to me its looks untidy and messy as much the work is unique and visual. Its a collage or fold out book which represents the daily life & what we see. The colour theme is all very bright if its orange than it will be clear throughout the whole of it or blue for example. I think the artist wants us to see an image as it tells a story so we see the same image but in a completely different perspective may allow us to see the photograph in another way.
Her work to me comes across as dramatic, however I don't dislike it. I actually think its very creative and original, its eye catchy and its not just a long layer of images creating a whole image its also transparent and using techniques such as light and transparent paper is her designs which is a lot more interesting in general. If I had to give a name to this piece of art I would call it 'journey' as the long sheet spread across reminds me of some sort of journey being shown through the repeated amount of images. The faint/transparent look makes it look and feel unrealistic

Alma Haser
Alma Haser's work is very abstract, Photography now also has the idea that it is a form of art, with the materials used to create something. I believe that Alma's work is very artistic. The style varies from scrunched up materials, paint and origami. People who has already seen her work describe it as 'eye catching and captivates the mind'. She takes her photographs and then starts working around them, using collaging , mixed media and intensive paper folding techniques. She takes photographs then works around her personal subject to create these above. Her process is very artistic as it is her own skills and her imagination which is very creative and imaginative. Alma's work also concentrates on the idea of tricking the mind in making people question wherever the work is 2-dimensional or 3 dimensional imagery. After researching about her work I also found out she is fascinated by the idea of twins and their genetics and also how to distinguish them. The collection of images also look sort of cartoon, unrealistic which is why I descried it as abstract
How I might respond:
For a first response I would start looking at different materials, and there effects on different photographs maybe just materials or liquids and effects. laminating a combination of materials together and seeing there outcome for example the mixture between paint and flowers. dye and old materials. then extending this idea until I have a collection of first attempts on materials. Im experimenting with the material\liquid (paint) being compressed together and taking a photograph of the materials squashed and its effects
Seeing Hwan Oh
Seung Swan oh, The materials used in this are a bit over the top he used bacteria\fungus on top of his photographs and somehow these are the colourful outcomes that came from it. In some ways the photographs looks as if it has been eaten alive, well it has by bacteria a living but killing micro-organism. The bacteria caused the variety of colours from the photograph to collide, become very contrasted and bright. All images have been displayed as very blurred and unclear to the point of the actual details of the piece are not shown, just the outlining of a figure or body part. This artist mixed photography and micro-biology and has now re-created art. Its unusual but his work actually looks as if it is diseased but in a some what safer way. The images sort of look like chemigram's, where the work uses chemicals to create this liquid look. In some photographs there are bubbles, smudges and smokey effects.
Out of all his photographs, this one is my favourite it has a clear show of his different technique, you can literally see the bacteria eating away at the paper and the effects it is giving the photograph. This picture is effective as it has so many bright colours. The mark in the middle comes across like a crack or a rip running down the middle of the photograph. The photograph also looks as if it has been painted thats how much detail the bacteria has created. The lines in between the crack looks like the roots of the very bottom of tree and as if they are carrying on growing. The colours moving around looks as if it is still wet or like spray paint. like it has been lightly sprayed on but not hard enough for it to be bold. It is more faint and more smudged away. I like this idea because I never knew you could use bacteria to create something so artistic its not something I could try but its still a good idea. |
Victorian villasana
This piece uses materials as sewing over photographs she as taken herself, the photographs are bold because the foreground is in black and white and then the sewing is bright bold colours such as bright pink, orange, blue and yellow... This idea is effective as the images get lifted by the simplest lines made by thread. Her work creates bold statements, such as clothing or body actions, the colours and lines makes you look carefully at the pictures. Some of her messages are placed in distorted and random areas. She also uses old images in which contrasts with the very bright colours, The lines are placed neatly and have been thought out carefully. She uses clear and sharp shapes, she either uses shard triangle/shapes or heaving strands of thread in one area. I believe the artists started doing this because the clear composition between dark and light has been thrown across all of these images. She is quite abstract and Victoria is original as no one else has created this. I believe she done this because she can show the abstract things with sewing that we can't see before hand, it opens up our imagination in that we explore new views and ideas.
first example;
My first attempt,
For my first attempt i gathered up a group of old materials such as newspapers, train tickets, maps and photograms and random incomplete images. I started of by ripping and shredding these collected items and started to organise them into a pattern, I would have a certain theme for each collage. The theme would either be old fashioned or colourful. Also on one of them I attempted to sew
through the finished materials piece as it would give the piece more texture and would pop out. This first artist response was to Lee McKenna. I think it represents his work well because he layers out different materials to create a theme, I have done the same where
as i have made it more scattered and untidy. The pieces have been stuck down by glue and been over layered on top each other.
I did not want to leave any of the white piece of paper to come through or be seen. I scrunched up some of the materials so that it didn't look flat & basic. The reason I did not use scissors to cut out the materials was so that I could rip it instead and would effective as its more dramatic. It also creates an abstract look which I couldn't achieve with using scissors. A big difference between Lee McKenna's work and my attempt is that he creates a contrast between dark and light. He uses black and white photographs surrounded by colourful backgrounds including flowers, bold text and and bright pieces of paper. This was only my first attempt

Lumen prints
Lumen printing is an idea where you collect 3D or 2D objects which get placed onto a photographic piece of paper being exposed to light and re-creates the objects shape and detail. It is then placed into the fixer to create something which is permanent. the colours that form are usually a bright pink or purple, maybe yellow and brown but when placed into the fixer the colour on the photographic paper fades and becomes a very light pink and beige colour. This involves materials because it makes a print, pattern from collected objects like leaves and flowers that when the light hits the paper it forms some sort of faded outline of it leave the rest of the paper to discolour where as the object/outline stays white.
My attempt
I attempted to create one of these Lumen prints but using flower and leaves, these are how they came out, I did two small ones and one large one. The smaller ones came out more effective, I prefer the smaller ones because the larger one has too much blank space. And looks boring and does not catch my eye whereas the smaller ones are more coloured, more patchy and involves many more patches of shapes and different designs. I personally like these attempts because of the way the light connects with the photographic paper and literally creates an outline of the object you place on to the paper. Once the paper is exposed to light it straight away reacts and starts making unusual colours. I also like this idea because I think it looks elegant because of the flowers and leaves its connected with. I think this would be even better if different objects were used and different sizes of paper, maybe six small piece placed all together, all layed out one by one
